Field Trip: Fernhill for Beginners

Join Stefan for a 1 mile loop around Fernhill Wetlands. We will look at everything, but our focus is on the basics of the birds that are present. Waterfowl is most abundant, but there also should be some raptors, little birds and maybe shorebirds. Don’t forget to bring binoculars; that’s all you are going to need.

We will explore this remote and beautiful country and its varied habitats of Siberian Taiga in the north, the Mongolian Steppe, the Gobi Desert, and the Gobi Altai Mountains in the south, staying in a combination of hotels and Mongolian Ger camps. Target birds include Demoiselle and White-naped Cranes, Oriental Plover, Altai Snowcock, Siberian Rubythroat, and mammals like the Goitered Gazelle and Long-eared Hedgehog.

Audubon Birding Day: Tillamook

Join Stefan on a day trip to Tillamook for this exploration of various hotspots through estuaries, woodland patches, farm fields, and wetlands. In winter, the agricultural fields in Tillamook serve as a refuge for gulls, sparrows, and raptors. Black Phoebe and White-tailed Kite are among the day’s targets. The New School of Birding, Module 1

Join expert birders and trip leaders, Candace and Dan, for a six-week course with classes and in-person field days that will take you on a riveting journey through the world of bird biology, field identification, and conservation. Through lectures, quizzes, helpful handouts, live interaction with your instructors, and extensive field time, you’ll build both your birding skills and gain a deeper understanding of what’s going on beneath all those feathers!  

Module 1 will focus on some of the secrets that birds have on the inside. Birds are amazing flying machines, and the physiology that provides for this most famous of superpowers includes an impressive synergy between lightweight bone mass, powerful muscles, ultra-efficient respiration, and many other unique adaptations. Virtual classes will be held on Wednesdays: January 12, January 19, January 26, February 9, February 16, and February 23 from 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm. Field days: January 22, February 12, and February 26.
