The Best of Trinidad and Tobago: Birding and Wildlife

Widely considered to be the most measured introduction into the world of Neotropical birding, Trinidad and Tobago’s impressive species list of just under 500 boasts representatives in almost all the major families of the Neotropics. From the emblematic and unforgettable experience of watching thousands of Scarlet Ibis return to their roost in the Caroni Swamp to catching a glimpse of the critically endangered Trinidad Piping-Guan as it deftly negotiates moss-covered branches to sip water collected in bromeliads, experiences are both authentic and enriching.

As a cherry on top of a beautiful trip, the Asa Wright Nature Center will be open again, and we will spend a few nights at this world-renowned birding lodge.

Deep Birding through the Seasons

Nature immersion is an integral part of our well-being and a place to step away from our busy lives and modern society, building a sense of wonder and respect for a world much bigger than ourselves. Join Dan and Candace as we use a slower approach to connecting with nature with a focus on understanding birds. From March through July, we’ll dive deep into our senses, focusing on awareness and intention, careful observation, inspired field journaling and basic illustration and mindfulness.

We’ll begin each 3-week module with an evening class to orient ourselves to the rhythm of the season, followed by weekly field days in a variety of local natural areas. Each field excursion will include both group activities and solo sit spots, exercises in birding without binoculars, deep listening and an opportunity to weave creativity into our birding practice. We’ll build our skills as field birders while we build our connection to the natural systems that surround us.

Watercolor Painting with Ronna: The California Quail

For the holiday season, we will be painting the California Quail. The colorful feather patterns may seem hard, but with a little practice, Ronna will teach you techniques in watercolor to achieve beautiful and believable layers of color resembling the lovely California Quail.
Students can paint along with Ronna during this live class or work at their own pace with access to the recording afterward.

School Break Day Camp - Fun Fridays: Nature Candle Crafting

Learn the craft of candle making! Candles have been used as a source of light to illuminate the dark for more than 5,000 years and symbolize a celebration, honor a ceremony, soothe the senses, and cast a warm and lovely glow to the cold days of winter. You’ll work with beeswax, wicks, and molds to create beautiful and functional nature-themed candles to brighten up the short winter days. This camp is for students in grades 4-6.
