BigJoy Birding at Errol Heights (BIPOC/Queer)

Let’s go birding together at Errol Heights! This is a local hidden yet favorited birding spot with occasional wandering peacocks in SE Portland. In this riparian habitat along the Johnson Creek Watershed we might spot close views of ducks like Hooded Mergansers and other wading water birds. woodpeckers and perched raptors are often spotted as well. First timers and beginner birders are 100% welcome. Binoculars provided.

Accessible Outing: Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

Join Bird Alliance of Oregon for an accessible birding outing at the lovely Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden! This garden is amazing in the Springtime but also holds many wonders in the fall.  
We’ll experience this garden in its fall season along with the resident songbirds and many fun ducks and geese. Together we will make our way through the garden by foot or by wheelchair.  
This outing is reserved for people who identify as disabled, chronically ill, or neurodivergent and their family, friends or caregivers. Our accessible outings are made for and led by birders with disabilities. Beginning birders are welcome! Extra binoculars will be available.

First Fridays at Fernhill: Beginner Birding

Are you bird-curious but don’t know where to start? No problem! This monthly outing is perfect for people of all skill levels, whether you’re just starting out, a seasoned birder, or just looking to find a community of folks to enjoy birds with. Join Chris Williams at Fernhill Wetlands the first Friday morning of each month to immerse yourself in the wonders of this birdy hotspot. Fall is a great time to go birding; our spring migrants are preparing to leave, shorebirds are starting their migration south, and soon waterfowl will start to show up. Each month we will focus on a different bird to help guide our walk.

Bird Journals for Beginners and Continuing Journalers!

Get started or continue with your bird journal, using drawing, simple watercolor, and writing. We use specimens and photos to practice. You will try simple ways to learn to see in new ways, then draw, write, and use watercolors, and develop your pages. No art experience needed, just enthusiasm and a few tools! Register for each class separately.

South Florida Getaway

Join Bird Alliance of Oregon for a getaway to sunny Florida, where we'll travel the southern portion of the state in search of its unique birdlife. We'll visit the famed Everglades and the Florida Keys in search of Limpkin, Snail Kite, White-crowned Pigeon, and many more. Along the way, we'll look for enigmatic wildlife like American Crocodile and Manatees and enjoy the fascinating natural history of The Sunshine State.

Field Trip:

Relaxing Sound Bath & Nature Walk

This therapeutic sound bath will calm your nervous system and open a doorway to deeper presence. Participants are encouraged to do a short, optional mindful walk with journaling prompts to extend the experience. No yoga is practiced - simply sit or lie down and listen.

Sax-Zim Bog and Beyond: A Winter Birding Adventure to Minnesota

Join us for an unforgettable journey to Duluth, a hub for winter birding enthusiasts and home to the world-famous Sax-Zim Bog—where you can enjoy exceptional birding in a wintry landscape! Duluth will serve as our home base, offering easy access to prime birding locations. We'll enjoy two full days in the iconic Sax-Zim Bog in search of Great Gray and Northern Hawk Owls and more. We'll explore Lake Superior and Superior National Forest in search of boreal specialties like Boreal Chickadee, Pine Grosbeak, & Common Redpoll. On our last full day, we’ll go all in for any remaining species on our list. Superior and Duluth harbor areas often host Snowy Owls, and we’ll make sure to visit Park Point, an excellent spot for waterfowl and gulls. If we’re lucky, we might even spot a wintering Gyrfalcon! Don't miss out on this exciting trip!

Birding Basics: For Beginners Who Are Bird-Curious

Birding can be a challenging hobby to start, and finding a community to grow your skills with isn’t always easy. Join Birding Basics, a three-part series (3 in digital class lectures and 3 in person field classes) that covers essential topics such as bird identification, the importance of habitat and seasonality, birding vocabulary, recommended gear, and online resources.

Kenya: Kilimanjaro to the Coast!

Join Bird Alliance of Oregon on a brand-new Kenya adventure!  

One of the world’s most famous travel destinations, Kenya is renowned for its remarkable diversity of landscapes, animals and cultures. Kenya boasts over 1100 species of birds and all of Africa's “Big 5” mammals, large herds of grazing herbivores, plus fascinating history, friendly people and delicious food. We'll explore a wide variety of habitats, including Savannah, Wetlands, Semi-arid Scrubland, Eastern Arc Forest, Coastal Forest and Coastal Beach. Our trip is timed to coincide with peak bird diversity, when migratory birds from Europe and northern Africa are present and many resident bird species are sporting their finest breeding plumage. February is also a wonderful month for viewing the country’s impressive megafauna.

Beautiful Bhutan

Bhutan is well-known for its snow-capped Himalayan Peaks, vibrant Buddhist culture, and project of “Gross National Happiness,” and is perhaps underappreciated as a sanctuary for a vibrant fauna, including over 700 species of birds. Join Brodie Cass Talbott, who spent three years living and birding in Bhutan, as we enjoy some of the most charismatic birds in Asia, from Green Jays to Himalayan Monals, and search for species hard to find anywhere else, like Beautiful Nuthatch, Ward’s Trogon, and White-bellied Heron, amidst the backdrop of one of the most scenic and captivating countries on earth.

Pacific Northwest Trip: Lower Columbia Basin

Join us on a four-day journey through the diverse landscapes of Eastern Washington, where we'll dive into the region's rich bird life and unique habitats. From the bustling croplands near Othello to the waters of McNary National Wildlife Refuge, this trip offers a blend of birdwatching and exploration. We'll search for sagebrush species like Sage Thrasher, Chukar, and Sagebrush sparrow; avocets and stilts, migrating waterfowl, and raptors like Ferruginous Hawk. Don't miss out on this unique exploration of eastern Washington.
